For much of the fifth and final season of *Stranger Things*, the young Holly Wheeler and Max Mayfield are imprisoned within a psychic prison constructed from the memories of Vecna. Their mission for a way out in episode 6 has them experience a life-altering moment from Henry's youth—a moment that potentially carries the means to overcome him permanently.

A Journey Into the Cavern

When she finds Max in the psychic realm known as Camazotz, Max reveals she is sheltering in a grotto that Henry strangely fears. A clever observation a telescope found in Henry's old home lets Holly see that the source of fear lies outside of the cave. Matching her view through the cap, she and Max suddenly fall into a subterranean passage.

They watch a Henry as a boy find an man who is hurt and scared. Attempting assistance, the man panics and shoots, striking Henry in the hand. To protect himself, Henry kills the man with a rock. "Was this the turning point?" Holly questions through tears. Essentially, yes, but the act went deeper than a defensive killing.

Similar to other plot points of the final season, the significance of the events in the tunnel originates in the live show The First Shadow.

A Naval Mystery and A Spy's Mission

*The First Shadow* opens with the legendary naval test, which allegedly sent a U.S. Navy ship into a plane later called the Abyss. It faced creatures, and the only one to return was the captain, who came back in a catatonic condition with an different blood composition.

The captain's son, Martin Brenner, wanted to repeat this dimensional breach in remote Nevada. However, a treacherous employee pilfered lab samples to hand over to the Communist spies, who were desperate to launch their version of the tests. This spy in the mine shaft was that very thief.

So, What's in the Case?

Based on what is known about the doctor's experiments, the container most likely held samples of Captain Brenner's infected blood. At that moment, Henry is wounded and bleeding. He likely becomes contaminated upon handling the contents, which triggered the awakening of his powers—traits he would later pass on to the children Brenner would experiment on.

A second theory, the container could have held strange particles that was destined to travel to Hawkins Laboratory, where it helps stabilize the parallel world. The prequel shows that young Henry was transported in the Abyss, returning hours later fundamentally changed. From then on, he fights the influence of a dark entity, reminiscent of how Will Byers was possessed by the entity in season 2.

The Power of Fear

The reason Henry avoids the cave of that cave demonstrates how deeply scarring the event was for him. Even as he controls the army of monsters and attempts to pull the Abyss into Hawkins, a piece of the scared boy remains. Vecna uses fear, and the show is setting up a climactic battle between the monster and Will, who has confronted his personal demons to gain strength.

This journey has taken a weapon from Vecna. More importantly, Will now is aware of what the monster's own weakness, which could provide a key upper hand in the endgame conflict to come.
