Conservative responses to the partial release of files related to the Epstein case have been sharply divided, with some backers of the former Trump administration pointing out the prominent appearance of former President Clinton and other Democrats in images, while others expressed frustration over how heavy censorship cast former President Trump and GOP members in a unfavorable manner.
Justice Department Justifies Redactions with Fervent Rhetoric
Justice Department representatives defended the redactions with fervent exaggerated language. “At no point in American history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Department of Justice been so transparent with the American people about such a sensitive legal issue,” declared a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who issued a six-page memo outlining the redaction process.
Concerns Prompted by Blacked-Out Sections
While Trump's name and likeness are visible in some of the materials, the widespread redactions raise serious concerns about what may be hidden beneath them. A number of conservative lawmakers swiftly called for increased openness.
“The public are furious and walking away,” posted Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a social media post, Republican Kentucky Thomas Massie asserted the censorship violate the law, and suggested that a subsequent Congress may attempt to impeach the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Unfortunately, today’s file dump grossly fails to adhere to both the spirit and the wording of the law,” he added.
A Faction of Rightwing Figures Swing In Support of the Disclosure
However, a segment of rightwing pundits and former President allies swung firmly in support of the Justice Department's actions.
The release—originating from a DOJ run by key Trump ally Pam Bondi—contains hundreds of documents that are entirely censored, and many of the individuals shown in pictures have their faces obscured.
Yet some are not, including prominent individuals like Bill Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of the former president, in particular, allowed some conservative figures to launch the offensive.
“It’s quite rich how the Democrats falsely accused President Trump of being a sex offender, only for the Trump DOJ to release documents that depict Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a pedophile,” stated right-wing activist Laura Loomer.
“Recently released Epstein Files reveal Bill Clinton without a shirt in a jacuzzi with a female that is not his spouse Hillary Clinton,” wrote lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only one reason Epstein would photograph a US President with a girl in a jacuzzi: Leverage.”
Former President Campaign Releases Statement
Bill Clinton has repeatedly said he knew of zero illegal activity by Epstein and has not been alleged to have engaged in any wrongdoing. “The administration has not been hiding those files for months only to dump them at the last minute on a weekend to shield Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s spokesperson Angel Ureña said in a comment.
“This is about shielding officials from what comes next, or from what they will try and hide forever. Therefore they can publicize as many low-quality 20-plus-year-old photos as they desire, but it isn’t about Bill Clinton. Never has, never will be,” the statement added.
Overall Conservative Commentary Remains Muted
However, overall comment on the political right was relatively muted following the release, especially when compared with the vociferous calls for action that came before the congressional approval to pass a law requiring the documents' release.
The commentator, who recently secured press credentials at the Pentagon, had been one of the most vocal advocates for a complete release. Earlier this year, she criticized the Justice Department broadly and Bondi in particular after a group of rightwing influencers were given hard-copy folders of materials that included little new information.
