Eurovision Was Traditionally a Lighthearted Spectacle – But It Has Become a Strategic Method to Whitewash War.
A new initialism surfaced several months after the start of Israel’s bombardment of Gaza. Known as WCNSF, it signifies “Child casualty without any family left”. This acronym is unique to Gaza, according to health professionals such as child health specialists. Normally, it is unusual for physicians to care for a minor who has seen the death of their whole family. However, there has been nothing “normal” regarding the devastating conflict in Gaza, where entire family lineages have been eradicated and the number of children who have lost limbs surpasses that of any other place in the world. Nothing normal about scores of doctors arriving back from a landscape of rubble with reports of children being intentionally shot at.
A Hell on Earth Regardless of a Announced Cessation of Hostilities
Conditions in Gaza persist as an utter catastrophe. Vital medicines and equipment are being blocked those in need, and groups like Amnesty International contend that violations are still being committed. Authorities rejects these claims, just as it disavows all charges it is charged with. Meanwhile, while traumatised orphans are now suffering from the cold in improvised encampments, there is a little heartwarming news: apparently nothing is going to stop the international singing competition from advancing its professed goal of “unity and artistic sharing.” The contest will continue to offer a blood-red carpet for Israel, despite the fact that at least four European countries have now pulled out in protest. And this, apparently, is what unity manifests as.
Eurovision, of course prohibited Russia from competing in 2022 because of the “unprecedented crisis in Ukraine”. But the crisis in Gaza appears to be treated differently.
A Double Standard
Forget the fact that Israel was alleged to have used irregular participation methods last year in what seems to have been an effort to inject politics into Eurovision. Set aside the news that a toddler was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza recently. Pay no mind to the evidence that aggression from Israeli settlers and coerced removal in the West Bank have increased dramatically. Overlook the situation that global media are still blocked from freely reporting in Gaza. None of this, evidently, should be allowed to get in the way of Eurovision’s much-touted ethos of unity.
The Pageant Proceeds Against a Backdrop of Unimaginable Suffering
Eurovision turns 70 next year – nearly twice the projected longevity of a person in Gaza at present. The show may go on, but it will find it impossible to reclaim the whimsical pleasure it was formerly known for. An institution that initially championed harmony has devolved into a blatant mechanism to provide a cultural veneer for conflict.
